The Navi Mumbai Police department is fearing that the satellite city s becoming a prime target for drug peddlers as in the last year itself 7 drug racket was busted by the department. Navi Mumbai is developing on a tremendous pace. In the last few years many schools, colleges, malls, entertainment centres have opened up making its presence felt globally. There are Infotech companies, BPOs and top of the line professional colleges here. However, along with development, what Navi Mumbai has seen is a high rise in drug cases. The Navi Mumbai Crime Branch has busted around seven drug cases last year. Even the Commissioner of Police Ramrao Wagh accepted that Navi Mumbaikars especially professionals and students are becoming prime target for drug peddlers. Experts believe that people in IT and related sectors, especially BPOs, face tremendous work pressure and hence are more prone to addictions like smoking and drugs. While professionals make for about 40 per cent of the city’s population, 21 per cent are skilled workers and a mere 18 per cent are into business. The city, incidentally, has a literacy rate of 98 per cent but this unfortunately is working against the fate of the city today. To keep a check on the drug cases in the city, policemen have been trained by lawyers and experts to draft strong chargesheets. Navi Mumbai police has also appointed lawyers on contract basis to help them file strong charge-sheets. Bureau report – NMTV.
