Valsa Nair, a 1991 IAS batch officer who was formerly a city collector and then Konkan Divisional commissioner was appointed as the secretary of the department. It has been reported that of the transfers made by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Nair’s is the only one that went through. Chief Minister had also made many transfers that included transfer of CEO of SRA Shrikant Singh, transport Commissioner SS Shinde, and CIDCO’s Deepak Kapoor. The official orders of these transfers were issued on Monday evening but stayed in less than an hour. With the huge amounts of environmental violations being witnessed in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, it would be a challenge for Valsa Nair to take up this post and arrest these violations.
