Lack of basic facilities like power and water supply is evading the Kalamboli steel market, creating frustration and inconvenience in the daily activities of the traders. Despite its establishment 20 years ago, the traders still await the basic services promised to them. Its’ been two decades and CIDCO is yet to fulfill its infrastructural promises to Kalamboli Steel Market. It is not just the lack of power and water but even the pathetic conditions. On its part CIDCO says that it has handed over the market to MMRDA but except for collecting taxes, the latter have not done much in easing the life of the traders. It may be recalled that due to the failure of CIDCO to provide basic infrastructure, slowly the merchants flee from the market making it an isolated area that harbors crime. A proof of this was seen in the year 2006 when explosives like rocket launcher & grenade were seized from the scrap that came into the market. The area holds an eerie look and with the absence of a police chowki, reliable sources reveal that anti social elements and illegal activities are harbored at the market. Chief Executive Officer of the Steel and Iron market Committee spoke roughly to our team and refused to speak on any of the issues of security or parking. Courtesy their attitude, the steel market is an example of one of the failed CIDCO projects. With cameraperson Santosh Bodhare, Sudhir Sharma for Navi Mumbai News.
