On the day of Army Day, a protest is being held by the ex-servicemen of Indian Army, Navy and Air-force outside Belapur railway station. The reason behind sitting on this dharna is to remind the state about the rights of giving equal pension to the retired army-men of the same rank and for the same length of services. ‘Equal Pay For Equal Work’ is a Directive Principal of the state policy in the Indian Constitution. The right to equal pension at each rank for same length of services derives from the same tenet. Ex-servicemen of the city have many a times appealed to the government to fulfill their demand of One Rank One Pension. On the occasion of Army Day, ex-servicemen of the city sat on a protest outside the CBD Belapur Station, to show their solidarity with Indian ex-servicemen movement under which army men are sitting on a relay fast in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi since 15th December 2008. The Dharna will be observed for two days. One rank one pension is a highly emotive issue. When two soldiers of same rank with equal length of services retire, they find that they get different pension because they retired at different dates. We spoke to Brigadier Dharam Prakash, retired from Indian Army who spoke about Government’s inattention on this issue. We also spoke to Retired Lt Colonel DP Singh who expressed the same. It has been very difficult for these servicemen to live their lives with such less amount of pension. The present call to the Government is to honour its promise. The army men have given best of their years in defending the borders and fighting the terrorists. But today they are forced to fight for their physical survival after retirement on insufficient and irrational pension. With Kala Jadhav, Vrushali Chitre for NMTV news.
