Using technical jargon, the mobile phone industry vehemently held that the radiation emitted by its towers were too low to be classified as being injurious to health. The widespread fear that mobile towers caused cancer is unfounded, they insisted recently. The mobile phone industry has this week publicly said that there was no truth in concerns that radiation emitted by its towers was injurious and could cause cancer. But experts aren’t convinced. They say that to establish the problem all that the government needs to do is to determine the levels of melatonin in residents who live under mobile towers. Melatonin is a hormone, which is secreted by the brain. Studies have shown a drop in melatonin levels of up to 30%. This could lead to Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s Disease in people. However, fearing the consequences of growing awareness and protest against mobile towers, the people behind the mobile phone industry say that towers only emitted low levels of electromagnetic fields that had no adverse impact of health. To corroborate their point, they released an independent study conducted in New Delhi of 36 mobile towers in Delhi by the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and the Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai. However many doctors do not agree with this study. The effect of radiation from mobile towers is so well established that several eminent doctors have voiced concerns of this and the diseases it can cause. Experts say that the mobile phone industry is only trying to mislead masses about the ill effects of radiation through cell towers. Sana Warsia – NMTV News.
