External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj refutes all charges on Lalitgate

sushmaswarajSushma Swaraj has finally given a detailed statement in Lok Sabha on Thursday on the issue of granting travel visa to former IPL chief Lalit Modi and her role in it.

Swaraj reiterated the fact that she never helped Lalit Modi to get travel documents. Swaraj who was under fire for this isse said that she merely told the British government that if they gave visa to Lalit Modi, it would not affect Indo-UK ties.

Swaraj claimed it was injust that she never got the chance to give any clarification and to put forth her point of view. She hoped that the opposition would soon see sense and give up their demand for resignation.

Swaraj said that presence of Lalit Modi in Portugal was necessary as the doctors had asked for it.

Sushma Swaraj made a passionate plea and tried to convince the house that sole motive behind her action was ‘humanitarian’ considerations. Training guns on Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Sushma asked what she would have done in the same position.  With a touch of rhetorical flourish, Swaraj asked whether Sonia Gandhi would have allowed the sick patient to die.

Swaraj said if helping a sick woman who is not guilty or accused of any charges is a crime, then she has definitely committed one and is willing to take any punishment meted out to her.
