The fire at Infinity mall at Andheri has exposed how the innumerable that are cropping up in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane are violating fire safety norms blatantly. With local corporations of these cities failing to check these violations, the lives of commoners are at risk. Despite several attempts of the owners at Infinity mall t hush up the matter and term the major fire as minor fire the same prove to be futile. Fire at Infinity mall at Andhieri has exposed how malls are violating fire safety norms due to the failure MCGM. At Infinity mall, the fire broke out at 8.30 pm. Shoppers and theatre-goers were evacuated after the major fire broke out on the first floor. Ten fire engines and four fire tankers were used to control the fire. Four shops were totally gutted in the fire. No casualty was reported. Police officials said that at the time of the incident around 1,000 people were present in the mall. All of them were evacuated. The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, fire officials said prime facie short circuit appeared to be the cause of the fire. The fire brought to light how dangerous the mall structures in the city are with most violating fire safety norms. Even in this case fire officials complaint that there was no proper ventilation by ventilators to prevent the smoke from spreading. They also said that the mall passageway was enclosed with glass and that the ventilation was inadequate. Firemen had to break the glass windows to make way for the smoke out. What made the fire at Infinity mall more dangerous was that within the compound of the mall stands a high tension tower and if the fire would have spread it could have caused a disaster claiming thousands of lives. It maybe recalled that not very long ago a similar fire was reported at City Centre mall at Vashi. Despite NMTV News bringing to light how Centre One mall, City Centre mall and Raghuleela mal at Vashi are few of the hundreds of malls violating fire safety norms, authorities continue to sit as mute spectators. Maybe only after innocent lives are lost will authorities wake from their deep slumber. With Hansraj Kanaujia, Sana Warsia for NMTV News.
