During the session, giving a gratitude speech for the Governor, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh spoke on the serious issue of farmer deaths and advised all parties to work together in this matter. Appreciating the farmer loan waiver scheme of the government, he added that strict action will be taken against money lenders. During his addressal speech at the state assembly, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh declared that new laws would be formed for moneylenders. Commenting on the report received from the enquiry committee, he stated that 80% of farmers were indeed committing suicide due to the burden of loans. During his speech he commended the opposition party’s effort to enforce the issue of farmer suicide and stated that strict actions would be taken by the state government. He also appealed to all the political parties to come together and work together to fight this issue. It may be recalled that suicide of farmers was raised earlier by the media towards which the Chief Minister was always seen defensive, tossing blames to save their hide. But with the enquiry report and the open acceptance of the Chief Minister regarding farmer suicide cases due to loans has put the government in a dicey situation – for on one side their justifications in the past have been exposed as nothing but excuses and on the other hand, it has given an opportunity to the opposition that will have a field day in raking up the failure of the government with hopeless policies.
