GOVERNOR SLAMS MAHARASHTRA GOVERNMENT FOR TAKING POLITICAL DECISIONS IN EDUCATIONAL MATTERS

jamirGovernor S C Jamir has rapped the state as none of the colleges of the state have been included in the centrally-sponsored scheme announced by the Prime Minister. The centrally-sponsored scheme of 370 colleges announced by the Prime Minister does not have a single college for Maharashtra in the first phase. The reason being that the state failed to identify backward districts with low gross enrolment ratio. Governor S C Jamir, also the chancellor of state universities, pulled up the government on its inaction. In a meeting of the joint board of vice-chancellors, he said he was disturbed as a scheme for the betterment of minorities was not taken seriously by the Maharashtra government. As the state failed to write to the Centre, the latter identified nine areas in Maharashtra with a low GER and decided to merely allot nine colleges of the 370 colleges in the later phases of the scheme. Moreover, Jamir called for filling of the 40% (average) vacant faculty positions in universities and said the state needed to take a fresh look at the way vice-chancellors were selected, in a way taking a dig at political appointments made by Mantralaya.
