GOVT INVITES PUBLIC SUGGESTIONS ON REPORT FOR FEE STRUCTURES OF UNAIDED SCHOOLS

school-4A state-appointed committee has finally submitted its draft criteria to fix the fee structure of unaided schools in a report uploaded on the Maharashtra government’s Web site. Through a GR, the government has invited the public’s suggestions and complaints about the report. Apart from various expenses to be considered while fixing fees, the report suggests setting up a grievance cell to verify that representatives of parent-teacher associations are elected in a democratic manner. However, three members of the panel who support parents have alleged that their suggestions have not been included in the report, which indirectly encourages school managements to increase fees by up to 30 per cent every year. The draft says that there cannot be a rigid fee structure for all institutions fixed by the government. Schools can generate up to 15 per cent surplus income from various sources, and can hike fees by up to 15 per cent to fund expansion plans and increased expenditure like annual increment of teachers and staff, etc.. This amounts to up to 30 per cent hike that schools can impose every year.
