The APMC market has got some fresh stock of green chilies or hari mirchi that gives that tango on your taste buds. We can’t think of Indian cooking without a dash of green chilies. Slit, sliced, chopped or diced, we just have to add a few green chilies to add that tang to our food. Pick some fresh from your vegetable patch, pick up a packet of chilies from the supermarket or just ask the vegetable vendor to add a few free ones to your vegetable bag. Green chilies is an all important star in Indian cooking and here is a sneak peak into what this green, pungent spice is all about. Green chilies are available fresh, dried, powdered, flaked, in oil, in sauce, bottled and pickled. But the most sought after are the fresh ones which have just hit the APMC market in Navi Mumbai. While the summer heat has gotten to this vegetable too, the supply is quite sufficient and is going at the rate of 40kgs per kilo. We spoke to the homemakers of the city to know their reasons for adding hari mirchi to their foods. And while we are at the subject of green chilies, how can we not tell you its benefits. Green chilies are high in vitamin A and C and act as an excellent medicine for the lungs, a decongestant and help to dissolve blood clots. Research also found that “after adding green chilli to the diet, it reduces a major risk for cardiovascular disease. However, as they say that too much of something is not good, so stick to a sufficient quantity to avoid health disbenefits. With cameraperson Ravi Nikam, Sana Warsia for NMTV News.
