The Mumbai High Court has upheld the state government’s decision to phase out 25-year-old taxis plying in the city. The HC, however, has asked the government to clarify what concessions would be granted to the taxi owners, who have to replace the old taxis with new ones. The hearing came in wake of a petition filed in the court challenging the state’s directive to phase out old taxis. The HC had earlier appointed a committee and sought recommendations as to what relief can be granted to taxi owners or drivers, who would be affected by the directive. According to the committee, vehicle manufacturers were offering discounts up to Rs 40,000 for new vehicles. Bureau report – NMTV
