The final hearing on the case of the allotment of land for a crematorium at Koperkhairane came in favor of the Anjum Khairul Islam trust with the High Court directing NMMC to allot land to them. The decision has brought relief to the Muslim community of this node. Its been since 1993 that the Anjum Khairul trust has been fighting against NMMC and CIDCO for allotment of a land for a crematorium. There are around 10 to 12000 Muslims that reside in Koperkhairane. Unfortunately, there was only one crematorium for this community that too at Vashi which made the performance of last rites and rituals for this node very difficult. As per norms, city planners CIDCO should have provided the residents with adequate public temples, schools, hospitals, cemetery and crematoriums which obviously were not done. For the same, the trust had been running to CIDCO and NMMC with their issue when no step was taken by either of the bodies, the trust decided to approach the High Court. The recent hearing came in favor of the trust. Recalling the hardships that they faced to fulfill their demand, the Muslim community of Koperkhairane are breathing a sign of relief. It maybe recalled that CIDCO had earlier even allotted a land to NMMC for a crematorium at Koperkhairane but reliable sources reveal that this land near to the Beverly park was sold off to a private builder by NMMC for which an advertisement was also put in the papers. The High Court has directed NMMC to allot the land to the trust immediately but another issue that the residents feel may rise is the delay by NMMC in sanctioning Rs 50 lakhs for the development of the crematorium.
