Falling in Khalapur, the Morbe Dam has been handed over from the state’s Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran to NMMC. The official ceremony was held at the CIDCO Guest House where Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik graced the inaugural ceremony. In 2003, the NMMC has signed an agreement with MJP to buy Morbe Dam for Rs. 554 Crores. Since this amount could not be paid in one payment, it was paid in installments. And the last cheque of Rs. 21 Crores was given to MJP’s Secretary Sanjay Dashastre at the hands of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik at the handing over ceremony held over the weekend. Morbe Dam gets water from Dhavri that originates from the Patalganga River. With this, the historic moment of NMMC owning a dam got the official endorsement. After MCGM, NMMC is the only corporation in the state to have its own dam. The dam is spread over an area of 1159.96 hectares. The capacity of the dam has been increased from 350 MLD to 450 MLD. Speaking to NMTV News, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik said that this was a historic moment in NMMC’s history. Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik said that it is said that water will be the reason for “World War 3” but for Navi Mumbai is going to be water woes free city for the next 40 years. He also voiced satisfaction at how the science of gravity was studied to put up the reservoir of Parsik Hills and technology was brought to make the water supply system leakage proof. He voiced confidence that the city will get 24 hours water supply in the next 4 – 5 months. Along with Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, the other dignitaries present for the handing over ceremony included MP Sanjeev Naik, MLA Sandeep Naik, Mayor Sagar Naik and Commissioner Vijay Nahata. The Morbe Dam project is one of the visionary steps of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik that was started off during the tenure of MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik when he was the Mayor of Navi Mumbai and executed on war footing during the tenure of MLA Sandeep Naik’s three terms as Standing Committee Chairman of NMMC.
