Besides the protest of villagers, another thing not going in favor of the airport project is the cost factor. Though the international airport in Navi Mumbai has got the needed approvals and will be completed by 2012, sources at CIDCO say that the bureaucratic and ministerial delay and court cases, it may get delayed up to 2016 or even up to 2021. They explicate that they had sent the proposal to Center in 2001 and got the final nod last month. A project that could have been executed at far less an amount, will now see an expenditure of Rs. 3500 Crore. If there are further delays, then one can expect another six per cent inflation that will make the project cost “too high”. As per procedure, the civil aviation ministry will first have to prepare the proposal to present it to the Union Cabinet. The Cabinet will have to approve tenders, bids and shortlist the agency before the work order process is set in motion. Since this is a very time consuming process, if the project is not executed with any hitches or delay, only then will it become a reality in the near future.
