At a time when Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh wants Maharashtra should look for another site for the international airport in Navi Mumbai to avoid an ecological massacre, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on the other hand has stated that the multiple environmental crisis that confront our country have created an alarming situation. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh stating this while asking state governments to curtail pollution, clean rivers and fight climate change. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that climate change is threatening our ecosystems, water scarcity is becoming a way of life and pollution is endangering our health. Describing climate change as a “major global challenge”, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh sought the cooperation of all state governments to implement the eight missions that the centre has outlined under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. The prime minister also called upon state governments to modernize their forest departments and to fill up vacant posts. Ironically where on one side Dr. Manmohan Singh expressed concern that rivers all over India were still being degraded, the Maharashtra government has proposed the Intl Airport on a location that threaten three rivers of the area. May be the Congress-led state should listen to their Prime Minister’s appeal to clean rivers.
