INTERNATIONAL ELDERS DAY CELEBRATED IN THE CITY

Senior Citizens Day was celebrated in the city with lots of enthusiasm with many activities and events marking the days celebration. One such event was held at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium at Vashi where the senior citizens were felicitated at he hands of NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata. It is one of the rare times that a Commissioner of Navi Mumbai has taken such a unique initiative of bringing smiles on the faces of the seniors of our city. Old age is often described as second childhood, when people crave for attention and help. The aim of celebrating senior citizen day is to enhance the approach of the Central and the state governments towards the welfare of the old age pensioners. Seminars are organized, policies and various other measures are taken to support the older generation of the country. It is also celebrated to wake up all those younger citizens who have neglected their responsibilities toward their aged parents as well as grand parents. Most of the parents are leading lonely lives and nobody is to look after them. However, on this day, the senior citizens of the city were made special by a felicitation ceremony. The ceremony was held at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium where NMMC Comissioner Vijay Nahata was present to honour those senior citizens who either had a successful 50 years of marriage or who were above the age of 75 years. The event was a joined effort of the All India Senior Citizen confederation, the Samanay Senior Citizen sangh and NMMC. Speaking on their special day, a 99 year senior citizen expressed his view. A happily married senior couple for 52 years too shared their gratitude with us. On this day, a book Aging In Place was launched which gives information on health at old age. NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata while speaking to the media, spoke on the efforts taken by the civic body for seniors of the city like the community centre. However, on World Elders Day, we must understand and know that there are many senior citizens in our country who are homeless, without income with many physical disabilities and ailments due to the age factor. Hence, it is the responsibility of not just the Government to provide all possible assistance but also of we, the younger generation, to help them survive the tough world today. It is one of the rare times that a Commissioner of Navi Mumbai has taken such a unique initiative of bringing smiles on the faces of the seniors of our city.
