The General Assembly on 17 December 1999 declared International Youth Day. The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness. Youth people everywhere are key agents for social change, economic development and technological innovation. They should live under conditions that encourage their imagination, ideals, energy and vision to flourish to the benefit. The theme of the International Youth Day 2006 is “Tackling Poverty Together”. A major focus of Youth Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives. On this theme an event was conducted at Apeejay School at Nerul. Students of Std XI put forth presentations on a healthy vision for youth empowerment. Students made dynamic and powerful presentations on the burning issues that directly or indirectly effect the youth. The content ranged from population explosion, youth in rural India, role of youth in being alert citizens during times of disasters like Mumbai Blasts, suicide, violence, smoking and drug abuse. The judges of the event were three Apeejay Nerul alumni, which included Navi Mumbai News Editor Zeba Warsia, Dr. Himika Gupta and Asma. The winners of the competition were given prizes at the hands of the guests. On International Youth Day 2006, young people should make their voices heard and take action towards the common goal of a better life for young people today, and for all of humanity in the future.
