The Finance Minister Sunil Tatkare was not booed by opposition and ruling party members for referring to his hometown Raigad 17 times during his debut budget speech. Sunil Tatkare has announced that the state is planning to make Raigad a commercial and industrial hub to decongest Mumbai. The way the Finance Minister Sunil Tatkare is talking development for Raigad and neglecting backward regions of the state, it compels one to question “Is the Finance Minister Sunil Tatkare playing bias with his hometown Raigad?” As far as debuts go, State Finance Minister Sunil Tatkare’s was an unimpressive one as he presented his first “colourless” budget. And who doesn’t remember how the debut budget speech of Sunil Tatkare contained at least a dozen references to Raigad – the Finance Minister’s hometown, for which he was booed by the opposition and, embarrassingly, the treasury benches as well. However the recent plans of the Finance Dept. is once again raising questions that Sunil Tatkare is neglecting the backward regions of the state and giving undue priority to development of his hometown Raigad. In a recent event held in Mumbai, justifying the decision of developing Raigad as a commercial hub, the Finance Minister said that as the prices of commercial space in Mumbai are rising and the availability of land is limited, so the government plans to provide more commercial space, by developing several areas like Raigad district. According to government sources, there are plans to develop a large part of the Raigad district as a commercial and service sector hub, which will be linked with good roads. The Sion-Panvel highway will be widened and the proposed Sewri-Nhava sea link will make it easier and faster to travel to Raigad district. Prominent among the emerging areas in the district are Khopoli, Pen, Karjat and Alibaug. The ambitious plans that Sunil Tatkare is promoting for Raigad district once again brings back into focus how the Finance Minister had mentioned Raigad was mentioned as many as 17 times in the near-two hour budget speech. While the references were taken in good humour at that time, the announcement of the Finance Minister Sunil Tatkare to develop Raigad as an industrial and commercial hub; is making one believe that the Finance Minister is neglecting the backward regions of the state and is playing bias in taking development to his hometown Raigad.
