ITS BEEN SIX MONTHS TO FORMER CHIEF MINISTER VILASRAO DESHMUKH’S ORDERS AND MSRDC YET TO IMPLEMENT BAN ON PAY AND PARK UNDER FLYOVERS

car-parking1About six months ago, the then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to stop pay-and-park facility under the flyovers due to terror threats. But instead of implementing Deshmukh’s orders, the MSRDC sought written orders on this. Former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had ordered to MSRDC to ban pay-and-park schemes under flyovers due to terror threats. This however, is not clearly being ignored by MSRDC as they had not received any written communication from the government on banning pay-and-park schemes under flyovers. The MSRDC has constructed 37 flyovers in Mumbai region, 16 of which have pay-and-park facility under them. These facilities earn an annual revenue of Rs 190.03 lakh. Sources in the MSRDC said the corporation did not want to lose revenue and hence was hesitant in taking a call. However, when we tried to get the viewpoint if the vehicle owners, they stated that banning pay-and-park facilities is not the solution and that if this is the case, one should also ban parking in malls and theatres. They stated that the authorities should make provision for parking and then ban the pay and park system. A contractor of the pay and park system informed us that there are around 600 vehicles that are parked daily under the flyover from Cuffe Parade till JJ Hospital, out of which 300 belong to local citizens and traders.
