Chief Minister Ashok Chavan faces tough challenges in a more aggressive, new state legislative assembly. Ashok Chavan was very cautious during his short, first tenure of nine months-most of the time he worked under a code of conduct due to the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. His political acumen will now be tested as he tries to provide a stable administration. Ashok Chavan’s first task will be to ensure cooperation from rivals within his party. On this count he has begun well-industries minister and aspirant for the Chief Ministership Narayan Rane called on him to congratulate him on his selection. Ashok Chavan is confident that there won’t be any hurdle in the smooth functioning of the government. The Raj Thackeray-led MNS will have a sizeable presence in the 288-member assembly. Raj has already announced his plans to play an opposition’s role by adopting more aggressive positions in the house as well as on the streets. The Shiv Sena, which is licking its wounds, will also compete with the MNS to maintain its position as the major opposition party, creating new headaches for the Ashok Chavan government. Since the BJP has won more seats than the Sena, it will get the leader of the opposition post. Articulate and aggressive BJP leader, former finance minister Eknath Khadse, is all set to become the leader of the opposition. Ashok Chavan will also have to be more diplomatic while selecting his new cabinet as there is a long list of aspirants. He said that since many youths have been elected to the lower house, he would try to give adequate representation to them as well as women and simultaneously ensure a regional balance is maintained.
