Guess who’s writing a book on good governance – its Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil. The Minister is facing a lot of flak for failing to handle the internal security of the nation but that has not deterred him from writing a book on good governance. So you heard that Home Minister Shivraj Patil has been facing flak for his handling of internal security and has been criticized for changing three sets of clothes on the night of the Delhi blasts but this piece of news is new. The Home Minister who many think has failed to show apt governance in his own department especially in the wake of terror attacks in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, is coming out with a book on “good governance” eulogizing Chanakya and others. The book by Shivraj Patil deals with “how a king should govern his subjects” and has extensive references to figures like Chanakya, the astute strategist of the Mauryan era. It also draws reference from mythological characters like Narad and Bhishma Pitamah and Vidur of Mahabharata. Ironically, all these insights on good governance coming from Shivraj Patil at a time when the Home Minister is under intense pressure from a section within the Congress and the Opposition that seeks his ouster for “inept” handling of his ministry. Some might have been amused, some shocked while others not surprised at all when report of Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil coming out with a book on good governance hit the media circle. But another reaction to the book is unanimous – that is the Home Minister could practice in his dept. what he is preaching on good governance in his new book.
