The NMMC Standing Committee failed to justify its consent to call tenders for 10 proposals for repair and construction work of footpaths and pavements in Koperkhairane which were found to be in good condition and in no need of repair. It maybe recalled that NMTV News had aired a report on how 10 administrative proposals pertaining to repair and maintenance of footpaths were approved by the NMMC Standing Committee earlier this month. In order to find out the conditions of the footpaths and pavements that were listed for repair in the proposals approved, NMTV News took a tour of the wards and found that of the ten proposals, only two needed little repair work. While NMMC had shown a budgeted estimate of over Rs. 35 lakhs for these two areas, it seemed to be an exaggerated amount considering the conditions of the footpaths. The other footpaths for which the standing committee approved over Rs 1.5 crores of public taxes needed no repair at all. When we questioned the NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Anant Sutar on the approval of proposals of such footpaths which did not even require repair, he said that the repair work if for parts of the footpath which need repair and not for the entire footpath stretch. The same question was asked to the members of the standing committee who were present during the approvals of these proposals. However, these members did not answer the question outright but defended themselves with their own explanations. NCP corporator Shivram Patil said that he had demanded that the city engineers sit together and plan out the repair of footpaths and digging of roads. Congress corporator Dashrath Bhagat also diverted the question to how roads and footpaths should be repaired and dug. Shiv Sena corporator Vijanand Mane said that its not just the external part of the footpath but the internal repair work that needs to be carried out and hence the proposals were passed. Its very unfortunate that instead of going out to inspect the wards and check whether footpaths need repair and maintenance, ruling party and opposition corporators are uniting political barriers justifying this criminal wastage of public money. It also surfaces allegations of how the corporators-officials-contractors nexus works for their own monetary gains and selfish interests at the cost of public interest and public money.
