koli-lifegurdAfter years of watching people die at some of the city’s most dangerous beaches, the MCGM has come up with its best idea in decades. Realizing that no one knows the sea better than those whose livelihood depends on it, the MCGM has decided to rope in young men from the Koli community to man the beaches. This oldest community from various Koliwadas will be soon be spotted in lifeguard gear at all beaches. The decision was taken at the MCGM’s standing committee, where the civic body mooted a proposal to hand over beaches to the Machimar Society. Worryingly, for its long stretch of beaches from Girgaum, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Madh, Marve and Manori – Mumbai has only seven lifeguards on its rolls. Taking cognisance of the issue, standing committee chairman Rahul Shiwale said that they have decided to rope in Kolis as they are local people and are well-trained. The issue was raised at the standing committee when Congress corporator Sameer Desai pointed to the alarming rise in the number of cases of drowning at Mumbai’s seafronts.
