And since it is Labor Day, our top report in Navi Mumbai too is also on the significance of Maharashtra Day and the events held to mark the day in Navi Mumbai. The Maharashtra Foundation Day is celebrated every year on May 1 to pay homage to 105 martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of a “samyukta” or unified Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital. The first of the martyrs had died during protest in 1957, three years before the state came into existence. The state came into existence on May 1, 1960 after being carved out of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency on lingual grounds with Mumbai as its capital and Gujarat being the second state. Some Marathi-majority areas in Northern Karnataka like Belgaum were included in Karnataka which is a topic of controversy and a political issue till date. Unfortunately, despite 48 years of the day’s observation, every year it is rallies for justice to the labors that marks the day’s observation. A similar gathering was held by contract laborers at Vashi who condemned the discrimination and injustice faced by them. India’s labor force exhibits extremes ranging from large numbers of illiterate workers unaccustomed to machinery or routine, to a sizable pool of highly educated ones. The isolated, insecure, and exploited laborers in rural areas and in the urban unorganized sectors present a stark contrast to the position of unionized workers in many modern enterprises. With Maharashtra Day, all the issues of the working hands come to the forefront, unfortunately its’ for but a day. With cameraperson Abhay Prasad and Nilofar Shaikh, Sana Warsia for Navi Mumbai News.
