People have become eager for progress and development works should be completed in time said the President after inaugurating a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Vidhan Bhawan during an event to mark the Golden Jubilee year of the state. The President also said that legislators or a Member of Parliament should provide guidance and leadership to eradicate social evils like corruption, child marriage, female foeticide and dowry. The President, who also gave away the Best Parliamentarian and other Awards instituted by state legislature to Opposition Leader Ramdas Kadam, MLC Manda Mhatre, MLC Arun Gujrati. The others to be felicitated at the hands of the President included Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Union Minister for Heavy Industries Vilasrao Deshmukh, Union Energy Minister Susil Kumar Shinde, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Dy. Chief Minister Chagan Bhujbal, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Patil, former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi, State Revenue Minister Narayan Rane and MP Gopinath Munde among others. In her address she said that over the last 60 years, India has established a glorious future for democracy not only in the country but also in the world. President Patil was a member of Maharashtra legislature between 1962 and 1985. She thanked people of the country, saying “giving an opportunity to a woman to occupy the highest office in the land is a sign of intellectual maturity”. Describing Shivaji Maharaj as an extraordinary General and an eternal inspiration, the President lauded the great Maratha’s idea of a welfare state. She added that true public service can be done through active participation in discussions in the House and work on various committees. The President said that Shivaji Maharaj had an objective of a welfare state before him and that is why the social life of Maharashtra got a new direction. She added that his respect for all religions and liberal nature was akin to the concept of a modern secular state.
