Forty level-crossing gates along the Central and Harbour line will be solar power enabled in the next few months. At present, only two level crossing gates, one on the Kasara-Igatpuri section and the second along the Diva-Panvel section have solar panels. These panels were installed on an experimental basis. According to chief PRO, Central Railway Shriniwas Mudgerikar, the solar lighting system at 40 level crossing gates would be used for the lighting and will be equipped with solar panels which have charge control, back up battery and LED light fittings. Level-crossing gates are being done away with at various stations, however, there are necessary at various places. This arrangement is part of the action plan devised by Mumbai Division Electrical Branch of CR so that renewable energy sources like solar power can be used as an energy conservation measure. The cost of each panel is Rs 40,000. CR will save Rs 5 lakh per annum in electricity used if these panels are installed. Ajaz Khan for NMTV News.
