Political rivalry returned to haunt Airoli as two unidentified assailants gunned down Shiv Sena leader Nitin Prabhu from close range. Although the police suspect a business dispute behind Prabhu’s killing, local Sena leaders have alleged NCP’s covert support to the gang involved in the murder. Nitin Prabhu, a native of Kudal in Konkan’s Sindhudurg district, was a deputy chief of Sena’s Airoli branch. Police officials said Prabhu was taking a stroll at midnight with a friend when two men came on a bike from behind and shot at them from close range. DCP Zone I, R D Shinde stated that the murder may be a fallout of a business-related quarrel between Prabhe and his business partner. Navi Mumbai Sena Chief Vijay Chougule too spoke with the media. As a result of the murder, the third in a row at Airoli, the area remained tense and was shut down for the better part of Sunday. Most shops had downed their shutters despite the Diwali fervour, fearing a Sena backlash. From Airoli, Arvind Mane for NMTV News.
