Maharashtra Mahila Parishad had organized a meeting of all the women saving groups to spread awareness on Central Government’s decision of 50% reservation for women. After the Union cabinet cleared 50% reservation for women in panchayats, the government is mulling a similar move in municipalities across India. The urban development ministry is fast-tracking the proposal to increase reservation for women to 50% in urban local bodies. Even though the Centre is finding it tough to move on a 33% quota for women in parliament and state legislatures, quotas in urban bodies look much more do-able. Now it’s the time when urban women take the maximum benefit of this decision and come forward to participate in operations of local government. To spread awareness on this decision, the Maharashtra Mahila Parishad had organized a meeting of all women saving groups. According to the General secretary of Maharashtra Mahila Parishad, women should be encouraged to join politics and this was good opportunity given to them.
