Despite High Court orders, mangroves are being openly cut down on a large scale and replaced by slums at Azad Muhalla in Vadala. The efforts of BMC and MMRDA to make the city slum free by rehabilitation is somehow becoming futile due to some corrupted officers in the department who are giving leverage for new slums to be established in the city. While taking a look at Vadala’s Azad Muhalla, it becomes easy for one to understand how drastically the mangroves are being destroyed and slums established. Despite being aware of the High Court orders, the local administration seems to do zilch about the open encroachment on mangrove land. It’s not just the local administration but disappointingly, even BMC and MMRDA sit as mute spectators in the alleged corruptive working of some of the officers.
