Employees at Mantralaya will now have to think twice before bunking office as the GAD has issued circular that terms these offences as serious and warned all employees of strict action like suspension. Unauthorised absenteeism and attendance have led the General Administration Department to take up this decision. Despite reasonable allowance of 15 to 20 minutes given to the employees, late mark percentage had been too high. The latest circular expects the department heads to curtail such lethargic practices. In recent times, Mantralaya has registered 27% unauthorised attendance and 23% late marks. The employees who abstain from work without prior permission swipe their cards with the help of colleagues and register their presence on the muster roll. Three weeks ago, in a meeting at Varsha, the official residence of the chief minister, social activist Anna Hazare had raised the issue of unhealthy attendance at government offices. Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had then asked the IT department to introduce the biometric attendance system.
