Dharavi in Mumbai and leather business in Dharavi is something that we all know about. While the leather business seems to be flourishing in the region for years now, it has also led to water pollution in the area because of which MCGM has decided to shift their base from away the city. Asia’s biggest slum Dharavi does not need any introduction. Many small business have been established here and one of the most well known is the leather business. The once flourished business has become more of a concern for the locals here as the water released from the making of leather items has increased water pollution in the area. Another factor of concern for the locals is the foul smell of the leather. MCGM has therefore decided to shift base of the small businesses of leather away from the city near Ambarnath. The leather shop owners have however protested against the decision of the corporation demanding that if they are shifted then the slaughter houses should also be shifted from Deonar. The locals however refused to speak anything on camera. According to the shop owners MCGM’s decision would hamper their business as the distance between Ambernath and Deonar slaughter house is around 50 kms leading to a waste of timw and money for them.
