MCGM HOLDS OF MULTILEVEL PARKING PLAN TO RETAIN OPEN SPACES

parking-2The MCGM appears to be in no mood to build multi-layered parking lots at the cost of open spaces and systematic development. The civic body is likely to turn down a proposal to construct a multi-level parking facility outside Matunga railway station after a survey found the plan to be “irrational”. The survey conducted to check if multi-storeyed parking could be implemented near Matunga railway station was conducted by members of the civic improvements committee last week. They will take a final decision on it in their next meeting. In their survey of the 1,120 sq-m land, committee members observed that in the wake of the 7/11 train blasts, which rocked the city’s suburban rail network, it was important to leave open spaces around railway stations. Instead of multi-level parking facilities, availability of such open spaces would prove more important during an emergency at railway stations, the members observed. According to the plan, the new facility will accommodate over 100 vehicles and will greatly reduce congestion in the area but the civic body is in no mood to compromise on open spaces.
