standing-2As the date for election code of conduct draws nearer, frustration was evident in the weekly Standing Committee meeting as members saw officials not taking the meetings or the pending work seriously. Despite the Chairman appealing officials to remain present in the NMMC Standing Committee meetings, once again officials including the Commissioner and several Head of Departments remained absent without giving members prior notice. This irked the members demanded that officials who did not fear the diktats of the Chairman should be suspended, reports Sana Warsia. The second Standing Committee meeting held this week started off with Chairman Sandeep Naik loosing his cool over the absence of NMMC Commissioner and several officials despite the recent orders of the Chairman last week asking officials to remain present. MLA Sandeep Naik said that week after week, the way officials were taking the meeting lightly was incorrect. Protesting the irresponsible behavior of the administration, members demanded that the meeting should be adjourned. Santosh Shetty proposed adjournment and Ravindra Ithape seconded it reminding the house of the Chairman’s order to officials to give prior information for remaining absent. Chairing the meeting, MLA Sandeep Naik reiterated that in the last meeting all members had stayed several proposals, on which policy decisions had to be taken. He pointed out that the five year tenure of corporators was coming to an end and that’s why members are ready attend as many Standing Committee meetings as possible so that public work is not hampered. One crucial pending public issue being the 10% reservation for the poor at the NMMC Hiranandani Health Care Super Specialty Hospital. The Chairman said that the way the administration was taking all this lightly, it was not incorrect. He questioned DMC J N Sinnarkar, who represented the Commissioner in the meeting if he could take decision on the policy matters on the agenda. Namdeo Bhagat demanded that officials who were not listening to the Chairman to remain present should be suspended. At the end, the house approved some public work proposals and decided to stay two crucial proposals for the next meeting. Addressing the media after the meeting, Chairman Sandeep Naik said that many corporators have been following on several subjects for years and now that their tenure is coming to an end, it would be injustice if their tenure ended without closing the issues. But officials not understanding the gravity of public issues and are not even informing about the reason for remaining absent prior to the meeting. MLA Sandeep Naik said that this compelled members to protest the administration’s behavior and stayed policy decision matters again. There’s no doubting the fact that issues like 10% reservation for the poor at the NMMC Hiranandani Health Care Super Specialty Hospital are being delayed in a rather unjustified manner by the administration. Hopefully after the mass protest by members of all political parties in the Standing Committee this week, the administration will respond to ensure public work and public issues are not hampered, hindered or delayed by attending public meetings held for the city and its people.
