MERCHANTS AT APMC SHUT DOWN BUSINESS AT SPICE MARKET OVER NMMC CESS DEPT’S “SURPRISE” RAIDS

apmc-shut-down-2NMMC Cess department carried out a raid on the traders of the spice market at APMC which led to a temporary shut-down of business by the agitated merchants. The traders alleged that the officials of NMMC were troubling some dealers which led to the protest. Protesting alleged harassment by officials from NMMC Cess department, traders from APMC spice wing resorted to chakka jam. Due to the agitation, activities in the market were affected for nearly three hours as the protestors did not allow vehicular movements in the wing. The agitation by traders was due to the raid that was launched following a raid by cess officials allegedly to trouble some dealers. Members of various organizations of traders like Bombay Mudi Bazar, Merchants’ Chambers Associations and Federation of Associations of Maharashtra took part in big numbers. Accusing the cess department officials of troubling traders unnecessarily, they said that officials raised their homes without any search warrant. The traders demanded the corporation to have proper tax collection system in place. They say that the traders’ associations do not have any problem in co-operating with the civic body. They say that the cess dept should have proper cess collection system in which traders and officials will not need to face inconvenience of any sort.
