The arrests of the President of Federations of Associations of Maharashtra, Mohan Gurnani, chief promoter Pradeep Gala and treasurer Dilip Shah has led to yet another land scam in the city. Caught in the crux of the situation, the arrested are still under police custody and apparently the wholesale markets in the city have demonstrated strong protests in the matter.
As is the case with every land scam even this one dates itself to years back. In 1991, CIDCO had sold plots to the then organised body, Federations of Associations of Maharashtra to build 47 seven storey buildings of A, B and D grades for the traders, agents and workers in the city. The work was supposed to be effected in two phases. The first phase of 17 buildings has been completed but the second phase with more than 20 buildings seems to be suffering. A society member in this regard complained that the records of this organisation have never been audited. Following this government auditor-R G Kabra was engaged in the matter. The auditor complained that there have been misappropriations of 2.5crores from his findings in the records. This has led to all the three arrests of the members of FAM. The APMC Police station arrested the three accused. The city has been in an anxious state following the arrest of Mohan Gurnani. Wholesalers even protested by striking here. Investigations in the matter are still on. Mohan Gurnani is a very renowned name in the building industry here and also heads many social and commercial organisations. He is also a strong financial supporter of local NCP leaders in the city. Navi Mumbai News speaks to a few heads at APMC on the same.
This arrest reinstates that people with power; money and high-level influence cannot play with the law of the land and go scot-free.
