MPCB NEGLIGENCE IS STRAGULATING THE ECO SYSTEM OF KALWA CREEK

kalwa-2Absolute pollution and unhygienic conditions around the Thane-Kalwa creek is slowly destroying the eco-system of the creek. There is destruction of mangroves and coral plants and even fisherman have faced a huge setback on their livelihood. According to a survey done in the year 1979, every year, the Thane-Kalwa creek gave a total collection of fishes of around metric ton. However, the situation today is quiet the opposite. The establishment of industrialization and chemical wastages being dumped in the creek has killed many fishes creating a huge setback for the livelihood of fishermen. Earlier the fishermen were able to collect around 100-150 fishes which today has reduced to a merely 20-25 forcing them to travel either to Mankurd or Vashi but disappointment is what they face there too. The Thane-kalwa Bridge, sewerage water, impurity of Mulund creek and construction is adding on to the destruction of purity and beauty of the creek. There has been so much dumping of chemical wastes that it has adversely affected the skin of the fishermen increasing diseases in them. Even TMC’s Pollution Control department chief accepted that this was a serious concern. Although it’s the responsibility of the MPCB to look into the matter and take appropriate action but the deteriorating condition of the creek clearly projects the board’s apathy towards it.
