Nearly a year after its poor show in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Thane district, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee has decided to concentrate on strengthening the organization in the region. After their debacle in NMMC Elections, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had pointed the same. After the meeting convened recently by MPCC Chief Manikrao Thakre, once again talks of change in leadership in Navi Mumbai District Congress Committee has started doing the rounds. MPCC is worried. Strengthening the party in Thane district has become one of the top priorities of the Congress in the state. It’s nearly a year after its poor show in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Thane district, that MPCC has decided to concentrate on strengthening the organization in the region. Thane district has assumed importance after delimitation of constituencies with 24 assembly and four parliamentary seats. The Congress has only one MLA Rajendra Gavit in Palghar and MP Suresh Taware from Bhiwandi seat. Party sources said that the meeting convened by MPCC President Manikrao Thakre and attended by Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and senior party office bearers in charge of the district, deliberated on strengthening the party unit in the district and boosting the morale of party cadre. The party has decided to overhaul the organization and appoint two working presidents for the District Congress Committee. Similarly, the Congress will appoint MLAs from Mumbai and Raigad districts as co-ordinators for 23 assembly segments in Thane district where they do not have presence in the legislature. They said that the focus would be on improving the organisation and co-ordination among the 8 party units in Thane district that include Thane rural, Thane urban, Kalyan Dombivali, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai and Vasai-Virar. Party sources say that the Congress has made up its mind on bringing in fresh, clean faces in the party organization. Specifically in Navi Mumbai and Vasai Virar as in the Navi Mumbai Municipal elections, Congress bagged only 65,000 votes while in the Vasai-Virar civic elections, the party polled only 22,000 votes. During the meeting convened by Manicrao Thakre, lack of good leadership at the district level was also discussed. The Congress feels that this lacuna can be rectified during the ongoing organizational elections. Post the meeting, once again talks of change in the leadership of the Navi Mumbai Congress Committee has started doing the rounds. Bureau report – NMTV News.
