Three contract killers allegedly hired by notorious gangster Bharat Nepali were arrested on charges of gunning down Shahid Azmi, who was the counsel to a 26/11 co-accused. Details with this report. Last week Shahid Azmi, who was the counsel to a 26/11 co-accused, was mercilessly gunned down in his Kurla office. This incident is being viewed as the return of the underworld in Mumbai with the murder being associated to the Chota Rajan group. Now the Mumbai Police has arrested three persons from suburban Mulund around 12 noon, Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria told reporters. However, motive behind the murder remains unclear. The murder was executed on the instructions of Nepali and his associate Vijay alias Baba Shetty who had paid Rs 1 lakh contract money to the killers, he said. Nepali, a former close associate of underworld don Chhota Rajan, had split from the gang and formed his own outfit. Although the motive of Azmi’s murder was not yet known, police suspect the shooting was part of Nepali’s efforts to establish his supremacy in the underworld. Maria said the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) may be invoked against the trio. The cop assured that the Mumbai Police was capable and prepared to face the underworld. While the police looks confident, the fact that the underworld is raising its ugly heads again in the financial capital of the country is a matter of grave concern.
