MUMBAI TO BE THE FIRST CITY TO GET SMART CARD FOR COMMUTERS

Smart-Card-1After Singapore, Hong Kong and London, Mumbai would be the first city in India to introduce the usage of common transport ticketing cards for common travel in buses and train.Mumbai has became the first city in the country to start usage of common transport ticketing cards called Go Mumbai, enabling commuters to make cashless transactions. Such transport cards are common across cities like Singapore, Hong Kong and London. The common transport card can be used for both bus and train travels. Commuters on CR main and harbor lines can use the multi-utility card, which is already being used by over eight lakh BEST commuters as a monthly pass. The card – it was one of the ambitious plans announced by Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in this year’s Rail Budget – will not only be able to issue normal tickets, extensions but also season tickets too. Service of the card would be further upgraded by extending it to the Western Railway’s suburban network and also to the BEST buses to buy single journey tickets in a year’s time. Then the card will be developed to pay toll, parking and various such utilities. The authorities are also working on recharging the card online to minimize hassles. Bureau report NMTV
