NAVI MUMBAI AIRPORT: HC RELIEF FOR STATE

air-port1Decks have been cleared for the state to approach the Union ministry of environment and forests to seek relaxation in rules for its new airport in Navi Mumbai. The Mumbai HC recently said its order had not restricted any authority from exercising its statutory powers. The Navi Mumbai International Airport has not had it easy. Since the time of its initial plans, it has faced many hurdles especially receiving environment clearance. It maybe recalled that CIDCO had sought the HC’s permission to move the Union ministry of environment and forests seeking a change in the Coastal Regulation Zone law for its upcoming airport at Panvel. Their advocate told the court that CRZ rules could be relaxed for vital projects like the airport. Coming all out in favor of CIDCO, the Mumbai High Court, in its recent order said that it had not restricted any authority from exercising their statutory powers, which means the state can now approach the Union Ministry to seek relaxation of CRZ norms. Earlier last month, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had made a public announcement of getting all the clearances for the Navi Mumbai Intl’ Airport from the Union Environment Ministry headed by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh when the Prime Minister had visited the city. Earlier the Navi Mumbai Intl’ Airport had hit another hurdle when the Union Environment Ministry had rejected the site chosen for the construction of the airport as it involved massive massacre of mangroves. Since, then the speculations that the Navi Mumbai Intl’ Airport will never see the light of the day had resumed. But with the Chief Minister’s announcement and now with the Mumbai High Court order, things may finally smooth out for CIDCO for its ambitious International Airport project. Zeba Warsia – NMTV News.
