NCP leader Jitendra Awhad’s candidature from Mumbra-Kalwa has ruffled feathers in the Thane unit of the party and left party veteran Vasant Davkhare redfaced as he has been cut to size by the NCP leadership. Vasant Davkhare had been canvassing for his close aide Subhash Bhoir’s nomination from this the Muslim- and Aagri-dominated townships and is understood to have been pleading for a ticket for his son Niranjan from Thane city. The NCP leadership has ignored Davkhare’s requests and instead chose his NCP leader Jitendra Awhad as its nominee from Mumbra-Kalwa. The party gave away the Thane seat to the Congress. Davkhare is the deputy chairperson of the state legislative council. He had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls against the Shiv Sena’s Prakash Paranjape in 2004 and Anand Paranjape recently. NCP leaders said Awhad was preferred over other aspirants as he had single-handedly battled the Shiv Sena-BJP in Thane, raising questions about their failure to provide basic civic amenities. The Sena-BJP has been in power in the Thane municipal corporation for 15 years. During his file nomination, the media spoke with Jitendra Ahwad. Ahwas would be contesting against NCP rebel Sena candidate Pratap Sarnaik. From Thane, Manoj Singh for NMTV News.
