The Nationalist Congress Party has said it was for a separate state of Vidarbha if people of the region had a similar wish. Dhiraj Mishra reports with details after attending a press conference convened by the NCP State President Madhukar Pichad. Addressing a press conference, NCP Maharashtra President Madhukar Pichad said his party has already demanded setting up of second State Re-Organization Commission to look into demands of smaller states in the country. Replying to questions, he said defeat of political leaders demanding smaller states in elections is no indicator that people had given up on the demand for smaller states. He said his party has already elicited views and opinions about Vidarbha from MLAs and MPs belonging to the NCP. He also said it is wrong to construe that demand for Vidarbha is division of the Marathi speaking state, for which 105 persons laid down their lives during the Saynkuta Maharashtra movement. Pichad questioned what is the harm if there are two Marathi speaking states and said the NCP party would support any resolution concerning Vidarbha in the Legislature. Madhukar Pichad said a two-day workers’ convention of the party will be held in Aurangabad from February six. The constitution of the state working committee will be completed by January 31, he said adding that women, youth, OBCs, SC/STs, minorities would be given adequate representation. He also said that a draft of a youth policy has been submitted by Supriya Sule, party MP from Baramati to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and the party will follow up vigorously on the matter.
