mnsAnd while the Raj Thackeray’s led MNS has become a political force to reckon with in the state, they did also fare really poor in some constituencies. A look at the results reveals that nearly two thirds of MNS candidates lost their deposits in these elections. Even as the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena successfully made inroads in the metropolis and neighboring areas by securing 13 assembly seats, 92 of its 144 candidates were not only defeated in the polls but also lost their deposits. As per the Representation of People’s Act, if a candidate secures less than one-sixth of the votes polled, the candidate has to forfeit his deposit. Even though it’s a fact that by securing 13 seats in their first attempt, the MNS has created a record of sorts, but it was not expected that 92 nominees would forfeit their deposits. However, the most dismal performance came from the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party. The BSP put up 282 candidates, of whom 99% percent that 279 candidates lost their deposits. Even the Shiv Sena, BJP, Congress and NCP had to face the voters’ wrath in this regard. Thirty-three Sena, 15 BJP, 11 PWP, 9 Congress and 4 NCP nominees lost deposits. Many parties are surprised with this and believe it’s time for introspection. The parties plan to probe where they we went so wrong. Bureau report – NMTV News.
