The state is very keenly pursuing the new housing policy. It is hence most likely that the state will have a new one by November 1. The highlights will be inclusion of the low income group categorically taken up by CM Vilasrao Deshmukh. The rural poor were not a part of the state’s old housing policy as they did not belong to below the poverty line category. Hence the new state’s housing policy will include them. One of the main reasons of floating the policy is to enhance lives of slum dwellers and BPL people. Hence, any developer making homes for this category will be allowed a grant of Rs 80, 000. Presently under the new housing policy the state has prepared two plans of Rs 450 crore and Rs 153 crore. One for compensating the flood-affected farmers and the other for repairing houses damaged by floods. Besides this, the state has also formed an expert committee to evolve a flood management plan.
