The Sewri-Nhava bridge link might prove to be a boon to decongest traffic in the city cutting journeys between Sewri and Nhava short by an hour. It now takes about one-and-a-half hours to travel the distance. The bridge will cut this to 30 minutes. Tremendous recent residential as well as commercial growth in Navi Mumbai has made fast transport necessary between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Also, with the International airport and SEZ soon to be developed in Navi Mumbai, this bridge, the Serwi-Nhava trans-harbor link would become a necessity in future. Speaking to NMTV News Managing Editor Zeba Warsia, R C Sinha – Chairman and Managing Director of Airport Authority of Maharashtra says that it is very vital that the Nhava Sheva Bridge and Airport project get underway simultaneously. Although many businessmen look forward to the boon, environmentalists say that it might affect the green of the area by effectively killing the flamingo nesting grounds at Sewri and mangroves at Nhava. However, R C Sinha goes into an attacking mode on the subject of environmentalists and their concerns. Around 50,000 vehicles are likely to pass through the bridge every day. The initial toll will be Rs 120 for cars and Rs 250 for heavy vehicles for a one-way journey. A large number of service sector firms have already begun shifting to the Navi Mumbai area.
