The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) created a record by collecting more than Rs 2,000-crore revenue in fiscal 2016-2017.The revenue collected in the previous fiscal was Rs 1,877.62 crore. This is the first time that the municipal body has collected Rs 2,050.92 crore. The primary increase has been in local body tax recovery which is Rs 1,022.41 crore — the highest so far — and property tax of Rs 647 crore. The NMMC attributed the increase to special collection drives and steps to recover arrears.

Deputy municipal commissioner Umesh Wagh said, “Taxes collected by the NMMC help the civic body provide efficient civic services in the city. LBT and property tax are important source revenue for the civic body. The total revenue of both taxes rose by Rs 300 crore.”
In the financial year 2016-17, local body tax department collected an additional Rs 152 crore while the property tax department collection increased by Rs 140 crore compared to last year. “Residents can pay taxes online through the NMMC website www.nmmc.gov.in . They can also pay through nmm e-connect app and that has helped in increased collection,” said Wagh.
Despite LBT being discontinued, the department collected a revenue of Rs152 crore.
The LBT collection was made possible due to the accounts of 1,100 defaulters being scrutinised. Cess arrears of Rs 70 crore was recovered.

Of the Rs 1,022.41 crore collected in LBT, Rs 883.51 crore was actual tax collection and Rs 138.90 crore was from the grant received from the state government for the period January to March 2017 in lieu of its discontinuation.
The property tax collection in 2015-16 was Rs 507 crore which increased by Rs140 crore in 2016-17.

Ward officers and personnel conducted special drive and attached 65 properties. The property tax bills were also issued on time and the payment process was simplified.
