The NMMC Water Dept. has formed a special squad to deal with the growing number of Illegal water connections in the city. The squad has found 250 illegal water connections in Rabale’s Bhimnagar, Gautam Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar. However, when NMMC officials reached the slums for taking action against the illegal connections, despite police protection, angered locals even resorted to stone pelting to protest the action. The squad had to stall the drive for some time due to the disruption and protest but later the drive was resumed and criminal cases were registered against the protestors. The Asst. Executive Engineer of NMMC’s Water Dept. who was headed the action gave details. On the other hand, NMMC’s Water Supply’s Executive Engineer Sanjay Desai informed NMTV News that nearly 1000 locals of the slums were illegally using water from these connections. He added that this is routine action but the number of illegal connections has multiplied because the corporation has not been able to get police protection for their drive in lieu of the elections.
