While other municipal corporations in neighboring cities Mumbai and Thane are struggling to meet the demands of the city to provide regular water supply, Navi MUmbai Municipal Corporation today boosts of not just providing regular water supply but also recovering the highest 94 percent operation and maintenance cost. NMMC is also the first municipal corporation which provides its residents with 30 ltr of water at a mere cost of Rs 50. Under the JNNRUM, the State Urban Development Department emphasising on 100 per cent operation and maintenance cost recovery through water bills, which other corporations are struggling to achieve. However, NMMC has not only recovered 94 per cent O&M cost in 2009-2010, but is aiming to recover 100 per cent in this financial year. The civic water department has spent Rs 58.23 crore as operation and maintenance cost in the fiscal 2009-10. The department has recovered Rs 54.68 crore, of this Rs 52.57 crore has been recovered through water bills and the rest of the amount has been recovered under the head of new connection charges. Apart from strict vigilance on pipeline leakages and water thefts, metering of water supply helped, the corporation recover maximum operation and maintenance cost. Other corporations are hardly recovering 70-75 per cent of the total O&M cost, but NMMC has been recovering over 90 per cent O&M cost since past three years. Today, NMMC stands in the first position in providing water supply while Surat Municipal Corporation holds the second position. This is one of the reasons why the NMMC received the National Urban Water Award 2009 for excellence in water management and service to urban poor.
