Elections has come as good news for the NMMC revenue dept. as all the aspiring candidates who were defaulters for years have rushed to NMMC to pay up dues. Monika Bhosale met with NMMC officials and finds out that recovery from these aspiring defaulters has run into Crores. Elections have spelt good news and most work for property tax dept. of NMMC. The dept has given out nearly 7500 NOCs and recovered a whopping Rs. 9.5 Crores for all those defaulters who wish to contest elections. And it’s not like only the candidate has to clear his dues. According to rules, even the person who proposes the candidatures and who seconds it must have to clear their dues as well, which means additional revenue for NMMC. The aspiring candidates are not only clearing their property tax dues but even the dues of their relatives, kith and kin. He added that ever since the election code of conduct was declared, their have been a rush to clear dues. Unlike previously when their dept. had to initiate legal action and attachments procedure to recover taxes, the rush this time has been voluntarily. He said that their budget target is Rs. 248 Crores and so far Rs. 193 Crore has already been collected and major push for this has been the elections. On the other hand, water dept. too has issued 2300 NOCs and recovered Rs. 2 Crores dues. Of this 90 lacs is outstanding bills and Rs. 1 Cr 10 lacs is from the current billing done. He says by March 22, there will be additional revenue of Rs. 30 to Rs. 35 lacs. The steep rise in NMMC revenue due to elections reflects how that politicians hoard money and default government taxes and when its their own selfish interest, they make a bee line to pay up off their liabilities in order to avoid legal complications on the way of their nominations.
